Alice Through The Key Hole, Kintsugi Edition
This Alice In Wonderland Carving was inspired by a battered ledger found in a antique shop, it had been used on and off over a 50 year span to keep records of shopping lists and outgoing from a old RAF base. The various different styles of hand writing inspired the background as many of the words could be related to the Alice story.

Leaving Oz
This Wizard of Oz book carving has been created using a vintage French dictionary and a single illustration of Dorothy trying to leave Oz by balloon with the Wizard, from a damaged copy of the Wizard of Oz. The green colour of the dictionary gives the impression that they are still in Oz.

Mrs Beeton's Household Management
Mrs Beeton's first published her Household Management book back in 1861 and are now collected the world over. Also suitable to act as a book end.

Isaiah 29.12
Commissioned piece. Generally I don't use bibles, but using a children's illustrated bible and a damaged encyclopaedia we came up with this concept. I got to thinking about the paintings in churches that were for the masses that could not read to help them learn the stories from the bible. There is passage called Isaiah , 29:12 "Then the book will be given to the one who cannot read, saying, "Read this ,Please "And he will say, "I cannot read". With that in mind and with certain illustrations requested this is what evolved.

Large French Larousse Dictionary
This is a Large Larousse Dictionary Book Carving which stands at 30 CMs tall. The book had some considerable damage to it, and been well used ,had wear and tear to most of the pages. The cover was black, or so I thought, I gave it a gentle clean to see that the front cover was actually green. The cover has been left so it has a partially ethereal look to it. The spine is leather and the covers are fabric. All illustrations within the carving are from the book. The book has an Art Nouveau cover but the illustrations are done in a Art Deco block style.

The Mammoth Book Of Thrillers-Ghosts and Mysteries Book Carving A.K.A You've created a monster.

Its called you've created a monster because throughout history women have been often blamed for the affect they have on men and the male gaze, she is trapped by society and how you should be. What does it make you feel.

Alice Through The Looking Glass, Kintsugi Edition
This book carving is a combination of two books one is from the late 1800's and the other is a more modern copy of Alice Through The Looking Glass
The book had quite a lot of damage and it got me thinking about the Japanese art of pottery repair of Kintsugi, mending items with gold. I wondered what would happen to the look of the book, so all the damage on this book has gold gilding paint in the damaged areas, and now is something that is being done on more books in the studio.

Alice In Wonderland Suitcase Carving
I found a old key case/ clock combined, the clock originally being on the front. The Alice carving replaces the clock, the clock then placed to the inside (non working) along side another carving hidden by a door recreating the small door and hallway within the book. The door is held ajar by a miniature tea cup.

Large Alice In Wonderland Book Carving
This carving has been created from a damage 4 kg French Dictionary and illustrations from modern copies of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. The illustrations have been arranged as they have been added to the carving, then water coloured following a colour pallet found in a different vintage coloured version of Alice in Wonderland. Every thing has been sealed in and finished off with Perspex to stop the dust.

Alice In The Mushrooms
This book was created with different elements from different books. The book itself was a damaged lexicon. The book was warped and sun damaged. The mushrooms came from a French dictionary and the Alice illustration came from a new Alice in Wonderland book. The book still has the bend in it and all items have been combined to create the scene of Alice walking through the mushrooms on her way to seeing the caterpillar. This work was designed as it was created with no pre planning, just allowed to evolve.

My First Ever Book Carving
This is my first every book carving . I was part time at college doing a Art and Design course and my brief was called remake. I took the concept of taking an item and doing something with it to make it look different while still retaining what it originally was. This was the one that started off my passion of carving books.
