Echo Mines Studio creates one of a kind bespoke art works by finding the beauty in the damage found on reclaimed materials.
Alice In Wonderland is one of my favourite subjects to carve and this is one of many that I have done but the only one that is this large. Using a old damaged French dictionary and just over 4KG in weight, this book was part of a 4 book set that was about to be binned by the previous owner, no one wanted them and they just wanted them gone, so I had them.
I have always been fascinated with the Alice in Wonderland concept but have more often related to The Cheshire Cat and the Mad Hatter ( calm and chaos ) than Alice herself and constantly find myself drawn back to this story again and again. Using illustrations from the two different Alice stories ( Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass) using modern printed illustrations I have created this book carving and this time I decided to use watercolour on the illustrations as well to give it a different look referencing the colours from a vintage colour illustrated copy that I own. This carving is one of my longer projects with just over 30 hours of carving to create this art work.
